Of all that is written, I love only what a person hath written with his blood. Write with blood, and thou wilt find that blood is spirit.
Frederich Nietzsche
I agree with Nietzsche, writing is only worthwhile when it written with the author’s blood, metaphorically speaking. To truly bleed out all of what lurks inside the mind onto the page, to see it come to life, to feel that tingling in your hair at the excitement of putting ink to paper or keystrokes to type, it is a marvelous thing.
Writing has helped humanity become a civilization building species. Recording knowledge for future generations so that they might survive better, has played a key role in what is termed “collective learning”. This is how we have conquered, this is how we have corrupted, this is how we have created and destroyed.
Blogging: The New Printing Press
Blogging, the modern incarnation of writing, fascinates me. The idea that we can all sit in our homes, cars, or local carwash, and contribute to the collective learning of humanity really does blow my mind. As a historian, why would I not want to be a part of this?
Since I started blogging, I have learned about my brothers and sisters around the world. People living in countries I will probably never have the opportunity to visit, have become friends. I never really considered that in my mid-forties, I would start developing friendships with people in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East to name a few (I included a link to Amazon for Classic Friedrich Nietzsche Collection of Books below).
Writing for Newspapers Versus Blogging
I used to write for some small newspapers and enjoyed it, but it was nothing like this. The tremendous potential of all these brave souls baring all to the world as a testament to their experience, our common humanity, touches my heart and inspires my mind.
Why Do I Blog?
So in short, why do I blog? The answer, to participate fully in our society, our civilization….our world.

Blogging is the new printing press… I never thought of that way. That’s a little mind blowing in that context
What is even crazier is to think of what will be next? Computers that synch with our minds? Neural Networks? Who knows?
I was thinking about something similar to neural networks the other day. It would seem like the next path would be computer’s sync with minds. But then again I’m still waiting for the Jetson Jetpacks to arrive.
Wonderfully articulated, I can resonate with your thoughts.

Thanks! I always think of that quote when I think about why I write.
My pleasure 😇
