Staring across the turf soccer field to the
Through the uprights of the yellow goalpost
to the valley below
sun beating down
a small army
of teenager boys
kicking wisened soccer balls
the wind
kicking up my black and white roll sheet

I wonder
is this the life I chose
or the life that chose me?

Waves of
contentment flow through my mind and body
a sense that
what I do matters
a sense that
my mistakes were all part of some larger plan

Teenage boys laughing
cracking jokes
reaching out for a handshake
a fist bump
a word of encouragement

Ripples in the now
Tidal waves in the future

Young men
Becoming
Fathers
Husbands
Innovators
Soldiers
Professors
The list goes on….and on

To know I played my part
a smug smile no one knows the genesis of
crosses my stern looking face
and makes all the difference

It is enough for one life
